An Overview Of Tutoring
Back to Info Line

Good tutors know how to share their knowledge in ways that their students can understand. In tutoring there is no one right teaching style. Each tutor’s teaching style represents extensions of their own personality. Depending on different individuals, tutoring may appear easier for some than others. There are no ‘born tutors’ who do not need improvement or those that cannot improve. You will need to put in effort and observation and you’ll be on your way to being a good tutor. Good tutors work at being good and are constantly looking for ways to improve. Tutoring requires experimenting with techniques and ways of relating what you want to convey to your students. Sometimes tutors need to combine numerous tutoring techniques in a setting to ensure that the student understands his/her lessons. Effective teaching should be thought of as helping students learn, and every student encounter should be thought of as a student's opportunity for learning.

Students learn in different ways. Some are visual, or more kinesthetic while others may be more auditory learners. Some may prefer learning in a group, one on one or watching and then going home to try it alone. As a tutor it is important to be sensitive to your students and understand that the learning curve will vary from one student to the next and there are so many variables to consider in the ways that they learn.

Tips For Tutoring

Helpful Hints for Tutors
• Know what is expected of you as a tutor
• Take time to get acquainted with your student.
• Prepare the necessary tutoring paperwork
• The better you are prepared; the better you will be able to tutor.
During The Tuition Session
• Pay attention to your student
• If your students have problems with their homework or lessons,
empathize with them.
• Be honest with your student
• Have a sense of humor. It goes a long way in breaking the ice and
making the lesson interesting
• Have the ability to "lighten up" a situation
• Have a good interaction with your student
• Know your student's strengths and weaknesses
• Work through your student's strengths to improve his/her weaknesses
• Keep your student on the task
• Sometimes your student might get ‘stuck’ on a problem. Lead him/her
along by giving hints that stimulate thinking rather than giving the
answers piece meal
• Make your student feel good about him/herself and his/her
accomplishments
• Know when to stop a session
• Give positive praise
• End the session on a positive note
Ending the Tutoring Session
• Before ending the lesson, provide positive assessment of the work that
was done during the session
• Give assignments if appropriate
• Do any necessary tutor paperwork
• Always end the session with a positive comment
