Tutor Professionalism
TutorZone.com.my has identified a set of standards expected of tutors registered with us. Tutors are held to high standards of conduct and professionalism. Although these qualities cannot be verified during registration, we expect tutors to have read these standards and accepted responsibility for them.
1. Respectful support
As a tutor you are there to provide patient, supportive coaching to your tutee(s). It is vital that you develop a respectful relationship between you and your tutee. Along these lines, constructive criticism of your tutee s academic strategies that is given in a positive, encouraging way is expected, rather than personal put-downs and non-constructive criticism.
2. Timekeeping
Tutors are expected to keep all tutoring appointments and consistently arrive on time; rescheduling classes is acceptable, but skipping them is not.
3. Confidentiality
One of the most important aspects of being a tutor is keeping the confidence of your tutee. Keep in mind that your tutee may not feel comfortable sharing the fact that s/he is receiving extra assistance, so please be discrete. To be specific, all information shared during tutoring appointments is to remain confidential. Maintain the privacy of the learners you tutor and consider information they give you to be confidential.
Standards of Conduct for Tutors
As a tutor, I make an important contribution to the education of students whom I tutor. To maintain high standards of ethical conduct in my tutoring, I agree to abide by these standards:
1. Tutor to the best of my ability any student with whom I work.
2. Represent my expertise accurately to my students. When necessary, I will tell students I am not well qualified to deal with specific topics.
3. Do my best to meet the educational needs of each student.
4. Avoid personal conflicts of interest.
5. Make no disparaging comments about teachers or schools.
6. Be present and on time for all tutorial appointments; notify my students if I’m not able to make an appointment.
7. Not give my students unrealistically high expectations about the benefits of my tutorial services.
8. I will not use tutorials to impose my value systems on students.
9. Provide students with a balanced view of their skills—neither giving false praise and hope nor unnecessarily harming their self-image.
10. Not do the students’ work. Instead, enable each student to become independent of me. I will strive my utmost best to help my student achieve academic progress.
11. I am familiar with the examination syllabus of the subjects I teach.
