Tutors are held to high standards of conduct and professionalism.Although these qualities cannot be verified during registration, we expect tutorsto have read these standards and accepted responsibility for them.1. Respectful support As a tutor you are there to provide patient, supportive coaching to yourtutee(s). It is vital that you develop a respectful relationship between you andyour tutee. Along these lines, constructive criticism of your tutee s academic strategiesthat is given in a positive, encouraging way is expected, rather than personal put-downsand non-constructive criticism.2. Timekeeping Tutors are expected to keep all tutoring appointments and consistentlyarrive on time; rescheduling classes is acceptable, but skipping them is not.3. Confidentiality One of the most important aspects of being a tutor is keeping the confidence ofyour tutee. Keep in mind that your tutee may not feel comfortable sharing the factthat s/he is receiving extra assistance, so please be discrete. To be specific,all information shared during tutoring appointments is to remain confidential. Maintainthe privacy of the learners you tutor and consider information they give you tobe confidential.Standards of Conduct for Tutors As a tutor, I make an important contribution to the education of students whom Itutor. To maintain high standards of ethical conduct in my tutoring, I agree toabide by these standards:1. Tutor to the best of my ability any student with whom I work.2. Represent my expertise accurately to my students. When necessary, I will tellstudents I am not well qualified to deal with specific topics.3. Do my best to meet the educational needs of each student.4. Avoid personal conflicts of interest.5. Make no disparaging comments about teachers or schools.6. Be present and on time for all tutorial appointments; notify my students if I’mnot able to make an appointment.7. Not give my students unrealistically high expectations about the benefits ofmy tutorial services.8. I will not use tutorials to impose my value systems on students.9. Provide students with a balanced view of their skills—neither giving false praiseand hope nor unnecessarily harming their self-image.10. Not do the students’ work. Instead, enable each student to become independentof me. I will strive my utmost best to help my student achieve academic progress.11. I am familiar with the examination syllabus of the subjects I teach.
